The Little Red Hen

Once upon a time, there was a little red hen who lived on a farm with a dog, a cat, and a duck.  One day the little red hen found some seeds on the ground.  She had a great idea.  She would plant the seeds and grow wheat.  The little red hen asked her friends, “Who will help me plant the seeds?”

“Not I,” said the dog.

“Not I,” said the cat.

“Not I,” said the duck.

“Then I will do it all myself,” said the little red hen.  And she did.

When the seeds were grown, the little red hen said, “Who will help me cut the wheat?”

“Not I,” said the dog.

“Not I,” said the cat.

“Not I,” said the duck.

“Then I will do it all myself,” said the little red hen.  And she did.

When the wheat was cut, the little red hen said, “Who will help me grind the wheat?”

“Not I,” said the dog.

“Not I,” said the cat.

“Not I,” said the duck.

“Then I will do it all myself,” said the little red hen.  And she did.

When the wheat was ground, the little red he said, “Who will help me bake the bread?”

“Not I,” said the dog.

“Not I,” said the cat.

“Not I,” said the duck.

“Then I will do it all myself,” said the little red hen.  And she did.

When the bread was finished, the little red hen said, “Who will help me eat the bread?”

“I will,” said the dog.

“I will,” said the cat.

“I will,” said the duck.

“No,” said the little red hen, “I will.”  And the little red hen ate the bread all by herself.

I grew up on a wheat farm.  When it was time to go out and do the work, the little red hen always reminded me of the importance of doing my part.  When my mother made bread, it was my responsibility to grind the wheat for her.  As soon as the bread came out of the oven, she would give me a nice hot slice of bread and butter.  I enjoyed the bread more knowing that I had contributed to the work.
Throughout my life, this story has remained with me.  At times, I have been shown something that needed to be done and if nobody would help, I would say, “Then I will do it myself.”
